N2O : Nitrous Oxide
THE CLIMATE SINNER
A new invention from NISSEN energy could eliminate one of the worst climate offenders from wastewater treatment plants
Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is nearly 300 times more harmful to the climate than CO₂ and one of the biggest contributors to climate change at modern wastewater treatment plants.
At NISSEN energy, we had an idea:
Could nitrous oxide be used in a gas engine—just like in motorsports?
Together with Aarhus Vand, we have now demonstrated that it is possible.
By feeding nitrous oxide-rich air from the anammox process into the gas engine’s intake, the gas is destroyed while simultaneously improving the engine’s combustion.
“It’s rare to work on a solution where the environment, technology, and the economy all benefit—but we’re close to achieving that here,” says Michael B. Nissen, CEO of NISSEN energy.
We are currently working on a patent for the technology.
Results at the Egå Wastewater Treatment Plant:
✔ Nitrous oxide reduced to nearly 0
✔ 30–50% reduction in NOx emissions
✔ Approx. 250 tons of CO₂-e saved per year
✔ Approx. 15% lower carbon footprint
