Net-Zero Energy Plan

The Kishwaukee Water Reclamation District (KWRD) aims to be energy neutral by 2025
(read more).

The first phase of this plan was to install two CHP (Combined Heat and Power) generators to power our facility.

Ahead of schedule

In February 2022, the KWRD turned on the 2. CHP generator at the WWTP in DeKalb. Ahead of schedule and after a year of planning. This was i.a. made possible by a half-million-dollar donation from Facebook combined with a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation.

The two generators, powered with gas produced by the plants treatment process, provide 125% of the facility’s electrical energy needs.

The generator reduced the facility’s power consumption by 60%.
To produce enough gas the facility began processing food waste and restaurant grease.

More beneficial every day

With what’s happening globally, energy prices are increasing rapidly, Energy efficiency is more important than ever.

Creating our own power is becoming more beneficial every day.

Our experience working with NISSEN energy has been fantastic

Just throughout the whole design process, the installation, the start-up. Everything from NISSEN has been really really well done.

Our experience with maintenance and service after the installation has been fantastic: They are getting back to us right away via email or via phone call – And they are able to get things resolved or answered right away.
